The defending champions, FC Dallas, has advanced to the US Open Cup Quarterfinals after they managed a 3-1 win over Colorado Rapids on Tuesday night at Toyota Stadium.

Right before the break FC Dallas was able to open the scoring as some short passing saw Mauro Diaz brought down in the box by Bismark Boateng. That allowed Diaz to then dust himself off, step up and hit the penalty past Zac MacMath for the opener, giving Dallas a half-time lead.

Colorado had emptied their bench by the start of half time, but the last of those substitutions took less than a minute to have an impact. Michael Azaria was able to get a shot away just seconds after coming on which was deflected off of Maynor Figueroa, selling out Chris Seitz, allowing the Rapids to equalize.

FC Dallas restored their lead in the 57th minute and again it was Diaz who was involved as he sent a through ball for Reggie Cannon. That allowed him to run on to the end line and then whip the ball back across for Ryan Hollingshead to poke the ball in to the back of the net.

The insurance goal came in the 89th minute through a Javier Morales free kick, earned by Cristian Colman. Morales stepped up and hit a low free kick, just low enough to get under the jumping wall and past the keeper to seal the 3-1 win.

It could have been a very different story if Colorado capitalized on their early chances as they came out from the opening whistle determined to get the win. Boateng could have opened the scoring in the fifth minute when he was left open at the top of the box but send his shot over the bar.

Two minutes later Dallas had their first chance of the match as Diaz played Roland Lamah through on goal allowing him to square for Hollingshead. He got the end line and cut back for Paxton Pomykal but the shot went off target.

In the 13th minute FC Dallas were agonizingly close to opening the scoring as a sweet backheel from Lamah released Hollingshead. Hollingshead shot and beat MacMath but could only find the middle of the crossbar.

Just after the half hour mark the woodwork again got in the way of FC Dallas opening the scoring after a short corner. Diaz sent the ball in to Figueroa on the left and his shot came off the near post and went back out of play.

In the end, Dallas did not have to pay the price for those missed opportunities as they were able to score three goals leading to them advancing to the quarterfinals again.
