Athenians to play Tigres in July

San Antonio Athenians SC has announced their second international friendly for 2017 as they announced on Monday that they will be taking on Tigres at the Blossom Athletic Center on July 15th.

The match will mark the second time that a Liga MX Femenil team has come to play in San Antonio since the foundation of that league. The second was also earlier in 2017, as Pachuca took on the Athenians in a 3-1 win at Blossom.

Tigres are yet to begin play in the Liga MX Femenil, where they will play beginning in the fall looking to match the success of their men’s team. Competition in professional women’s football in Mexico has begun with the Liga MX Femenil Copa taking place in May with Tigres finishing in sixth, although with a negative goal difference.

This match will be vital preparation for Tigres as their 2017 Liga MX Femenil season will kick-off shortly afterward. Tigres are coached by Miguel Razo and will be playing their matches at Instalaciones de Zuazua.

For the friendly against Pachuca, Athenians attracted 2100 fans to Blossom Soccer Complex, a record for a women’s club soccer match in San Antonio. It is expected that with the appeal of Tigres in the city of San Antonio there will be an even bigger turn out for this match.

Under Liga MX Femenil regulations, all players in the league have to be Mexican, with that rule expected to change in the future. As such the match represents an opportunity to see a number of Mexican women’s national team players and national team players of the future.

Tickets are now available at the Athenians website and will cost $10.
