The team that eliminated San Antonio FC has been eliminated themselves from the US Open Cup as FC Dallas managed a 2-1 win over Tulsa Roughnecks at Westcott Field at Southern Methodist University.
It was a heartbreaking loss for Tulsa as they were eliminated thanks to an own goal in second half stoppage time. Modou Jadama put the ball in the back of the net after attempting to block Michael Barrios’ cross.
Dallas opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Ryan Hollingshead found Coy Craft on the left hand side. Craft cut inside and hit the ball to the far post, where he snuck the ball just under Fabian Cerda’s outstretched arm to hit the back of the net.
The equalizer came in the 59th minute as the Roughnecks stole possession in FC Dallas’ own half. That allowed Kosuke Kimura to steal the ball and run at goal, sending a shot, low and hard, past Seitz to make it 1-1.
A corner nearly gave FC Dallas the lead in just the third minute when the corner was swung in from Mauro Diaz. The ball was cleared out to Paxton Pomykal who was able to swing it back in to the box for Matt Hedges allowing him to chest down for Hollingshead who sent his shot just over the bar.
Just one minute after being behind Tulsa used a long ball to create a strong opportunity which could have seen them equalize. Joey Calistri controlled the ball and was only denied by a strong save from Chris Seitz.
Another corner gave Dallas an opportunity in the 68th minute as Mauro Diaz sent the ball in to the box again. Diaz found Hedges perfectly but he was denied by Cerda who made a strong save to keep the match 1-1.
With five minutes to play FC Dallas nearly took the win as Hedges made a run in to the box and looked to shoot across the face. But Cerda was at it again, making a strong save to his left to keep Tulsa in the match. Unfortunately for Tulsa they couldn’t hold out forever and the own goal eliminated them from competition while FC Dallas advanced, avoiding extra time.
