San Antonio’s premier women’s club, the Athenians have continued their strong start to the season as they managed a 1-0 win over Texas Titans at Blossom Soccer Complex on Friday night.
The goal came from a stroke of luck for the Athenians as a poor clearance allowed the opportunity. The Titans could only half clear a corner which fell to Shelbi Miller, she was then able set up Ana Campa who shot powerfully in to the top corner out of the reach of the keeper.
It was a tight start to the match with neither side really willing to give up possession or control of the match. Gabby Lopez excelled in the Athenians goal to keep the match scoreless through the opening stages.
Midway through the half there was an interesting incident to give advantage to the Athenians as the Titans coach was sent to the stands. The coach entered the field of play to berate the referee, using some colorful language, well and truly earning the dismissal.
After the goal the Athenians controlled things well through the final ten minutes allowing them to head in to the break ahead 1-0.
The Athenians came out from the break determined to add to their lead and had more and more of the ball as the match wore on. Despite that they just could not break through for that second goal, despite their play no doubt meriting it.
Midway through the half the Athenians went agonizingly close to finding a second goal as the shot beat the keeper. Unfortunately for the hosts the ball didn’t drop and cannoned off the crossbar, letting the Titans off the hook.
It wouldn’t matter as the Athenians easily controlled possession and cruised to the 1-0 win.
