San Antonio FC has remained the only undefeated side in North America as they managed a 1-0 win over Swope Park Rangers, their first against the club, in Kansas City on Friday night.
The goal came in the 53rd minute with Kris Tyrpak managing another assist for the season as he played in the cross. Tyrpak’s cross went to the far post finding midfielder Mark O’Ojong who scored his first goal for the club with a strong header.
“They had to work extremely hard tonight and earn everything they got. I thought the goal we got was good and it came at the right time, and the players did a tremendous job holding on to the lead tonight.” Said San Antonio FC head coach Darren Powell after the match.
As has been the trend for much of the season, San Antonio FC conceded the bulk of the possession in the match with Swope Park managing 77% of it. But yet again San Antonio FC made use of what they have more effectively, Swope Park proving wasteful as they struggled to build meaningful attacks throughout the match, giving away possession too much as San Antonio FC managed 17 interceptions.
Despite the possession disparity San Antonio was the stronger side, having fewer actual shots, but those chances they had looked much better. A strong back four has been the foundation of San Antonio’s strong run and that continued as they limited the hosts to mostly half chances, Diego Restrepo only having to make three saves.
It could have been even better for San Antonio as they had their first chance of the match just 16 minutes in to the match. O’Ojong found Billy Forbes who was able to get a shot away with his left, beating the keeper but could only find the post.
Late in the first half Swope Park had chance after chance as they peppered the San Antonio goal in the final ten minutes of the half. But that back four and Restrepo kept the match level, coupled with some wayward shooting from Swope it was scoreless at the half.
From the goal early in the second half San Antonio FC really shut up shop effectively and held off the Swope attack, cruising to the 2-0 win. With the win San Antonio FC has equaled the league record for consecutive road wins in a single season.
