San Antonio FC has announced their first ever international friendly as they announced on Tuesday that they will play Santos Laguna at Toyota Field on July 8th.

Santos Laguna has been a phenomenally successful team in recent years winning the 2015 Clausura and Campeon de Campeones match. This followed on from 2014 when they finally won their first Copa MX crown, defeating Publa on penalties in the Copa MX final.

This match will be Santos Laguna’s second match in San Antonio in the past 12 months as they played Club America at the Alamodome last July. Santos Laguna has been a regular in Texas in recent years, having already played in Frisco at Toyota Stadium in March.

The match is the second stop on Santos Laguna’s Texas tour as they will play two other matches against Liga MX opposition. First they will play Chivas in Dallas before finishing the ten day tour against Tigres at the University of Texas in Austin.

It will be the first time San Antonio FC plays a non-American or Canadian team and is their first international friendly. It is also the first time that San Antonio FC will be playing a mid-season friendly, which will be interesting to follow, seeing the impact it has on league play.

In the most recent season Santos Laguna finished the league in fifth place and were eliminated early in the playoffs. That playoff match was against Toluca as they lost the first leg 4-1 before coming back and winning the second leg 3-1.

This will not be the first time that Santos Laguna has come to Toyota Field as they first played there in October 2013.

This will be the second friendly for Toyota Field in that week as the venue also announced later that week that Chivas Guadalajara and Club Atlas will play. It will be the first match for Chivas in San Antonio for 18 years, while Atlas are returning to Toyota Field after playing in October 2016.
