Two San Antonio girls varsity teams have fallen just short of qualifying for the state tournament as they fell in their regional finals on Saturday. Steele fell to Austin Vandegrift and Alamo Heights fell to Boerne Champion in the two matches.
Steele took on Vandegrift at Blossom Athletic Center and lost just their second match of the year as they fell 2-0 in the match. Vandegrift came in to the match as favorites having made the 6A state final last year and cruising through the tournament so far.
The Knights fielded a young side in the vital match, starting five freshman as they took on a strong opponent. That means that the future looks bright for Steele who will continue to be a contender for state championships for many years.
Just after halftime Vandegrift was able to open up the match as the ball was gathered at the byline from Afrah Khan. She was able to gather the ball with a tight angle and was able to cut outside and hit a curling strike that just snuck inside the post. The final goal was scored in the 69th as Holly Streber was able to bury the chance and send Vandegrift to the state championships.
Alamo Heights great season finally came to an end as they fell to Boerne Champion in their regional final at the Cabaniss Soccer Field in Corpus Christi. The Mules conceded an early goal, scored by Sydney Von Roesnberg, and despite a gallant fight they couldn’t come back and beat Champion, falling agonizingly short of a state tournament appearance.
