Brandeis Opens District Play with big win

In a big district match up Brandeis stamped their credentials for the girls’ soccer title as they managed a huge win over Marshall at Farris Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was a proficient performance from Brandeis as they constantly pressured the Marshall goal.

Brandeis took the match to Marshall from the opening whistle, with Marshall never looking in the match. They scored early in the match as senior midfielder Diana Gasaway was able to send a ball in for fellow senior midfielder Alyssa Blankenship who was able to bury the opportunity to open the scoring.

After some time holding out Marshall conceded again in the middle of the half as junior forward Samantha Palomino scored. She made the chance for herself and hit the back of the net thanks to the space afforded.

Following that goal, Palomino turned provider as she was able to set up a goal to make it 3-0 at the break. She sent a ball for junior midfielder Victoria Villasenor who was able to easily put the chance away to all but seal the match by half-time.

After half-time sophomore midfielder Mia Landrus was able to set up another sophomore midfielder Marissa Arias. Arias was able to get the ball and find space and send it past Megan McGath in the Marshall goal to make it four.

It was another Mia, freshman forward Mia Salas, who was able to set up the fifth goal of the match. It was Arias again who was able to get on the end of it, sealing her brace and making it 5-0 in the middle of the second half.

The six goal win was wrapped up when Salas turned goal scorer to make it six as two freshman combined for the goal. Freshman midfielder Ashlyn Zingelmann was able to set up Salas, who buried the final goal of the match.
