UTSA has got their conference play off to a perfect start as they managed a dramatic 3-2 win over Middle Tennessee on Saturday night at Park West Athletic Complex. Forward Jordyn Lacey was the star, scoring twice in the conference opening victory.
It was a largely dominant performance from UTSA as they were controlling much of the match with the score line perhaps flattering Middle Tennessee. Despite the Roadrunners domination, Selara Jordan opened the scoring for the Blue Raiders in the fifth minute.
Ten minutes later the Roadrunners were able to get an equalizer as they earned a corner quickly. That allowed midfielder Marianne Hernandez to send in a ball for Lacy, who easily headed home the goal to make it 1-1.
The shot count was all UTSA as the Roadrunners peppered the Middle Tennessee goal with shots throughout the first half. That saw UTSA lead 11-3 in the shot count, but at half-time the score was only 1-1.
As the second half got started in the second half as they controlled the match from the opening minutes. Just four minutes in to the second half UTSA forward Brianna Livecchi was able to get through the Middle Tennessee defense with a strong run and beat the keeper with a good shot.
Just four minutes after taking the lead UTSA doubled their advantage through some good link-up play from midfielder Channing Machen and defender Kaja Skare. That created space for Lacy to run in to and easily score the goal.
With a two goal deficit Middle Tennessee pushed to fins a goal and with just over half an hour to play a series of corners saw the Blue Raiders pull a goal back. On the third corner, Abbie Brown swung it in for Jordan who headed home the goal.
Goalkeeper Michelle Cole was impressive in the Roadrunners goal, making two big saves late on to give the Roadrunners the win. That put the Roadrunners back at .500 seeing their total record at 5-5 and a 1-0 conference record.
