UIW continued their early season exhibitions as they took on Texas State at Benson Stadium on Saturday Night. The Cardinals showed an improved effort and managed a 1-1 draw against a strong Bobcats side to boost confidence.
The Cardinals actually had the lead, opening the scoring five minutes in to the second half when UIW forward Alyssa Amaya opened the scoring. Amaya shot from just inside the box, and that effort took a heavy deflection which went over the head of the keeper.
Sydney Huntsinger, UIW’s goalkeeper was the hero for UIW throughout most of the match as she managed 12 saves. It seemed like UIW would have done enough to seal the win as the match started reaching the final ten minutes, and that was largely thanks to Huntsinger’s work.
But with eight minutes to play Texas State finally managed the goal that their play had deserved. Again though, Huntsinger managed a save, stopping Texas State forward Kassi Hormuth’s shot, but it fell for fellow Bobcat forward Clarissa Leon, who was left with a simple tap-in to equalize things at one.
That pushed Texas State on, as they looked to push for a goal that would give them the win. With the final play of the match it seemed that they would get that goal when Texas State’s Maddie Nichols beat Huntsinger and shot, but was denied as UIW defender Addie Bachie slid in and blocked the ball on the line to seal the draw for the Cardinals. Ordinarily a college match tied at the end of the 90 minutes would go to golden-goal overtime but as this was a pre-season friendly which didn’t count in either team’s record the match was left at a 1-1 draw ahead of the regular season beginning next week.
