The wild weather may have stopped the women of playing on Friday night but the men got on the field on Thursday night. And the men got the job done, with Ben Conway starring to put University of Incarnate Word past Houston Baptist 3-1 at Benson Stadium.
The win was vital for UIW as they move up the standings, sitting just one point behind Houston Baptist in the conference standings. That will all be irrelevant, as the Cardinals are still ineligible for post-season play, due to their transition from NCAA Division II to Division I but it will be a good recruiting tool for future seasons.
It was a great start from the Cardinals with Ben Conway looking dangerous through the early going but the Huskies were determined to keep UIW out. That defense was all for naught in the 17th minute as Noah Keats had the opening goal when Conway continued his stellar form, sending in a cross for Noah Keats, just in the area, allowing him to bury the chance.
But the Cardinals weren’t done and they continued to go on the attack, with Conway still looking very dangerous. Chance Pope was having a great game in goal for the Huskies, and he did well to deny a Conway header after a Keats corner found him free, but the save was solid from Pope.
HBU’s best chance came just after the half-hour mark, from a corner, but the shot was blocked. UIW had their own chance from a Keats corner late in the half but Migue Ojeda’s shot was also blocked, keeping it 1-0 at the break.
Houston Baptist came out determined to get back in to the match, and they started the second half well creating plenty of early chances. But freshman goalkeeper, Chase Therrien was doing well in goal, keeping the Huskies at bay.
Despite HBU having so much early possession and so many early chances UIW were able to double their lead in the 69th minute. A long ball came from Chase Therrien in goal found Dylan Kelly who was able to set up Conway with a flick on, which allowed Conway to finish the opportunity.
But Houston Baptist responded and got back in to the match thanks to a nice Dominick Faletto strike in the 72nd minute. Marcelo Acuna found an open Faletto, who hit a powerful shot from a tight angle that got past Theriiern.
In the final minute, UIW wrapped up the win when a foul allowed Ben Conway to step up, 30 yards out from goal. That did not deter Conway, as he launched a stellar free-kick to beat the keeper and seal the 3-1 win with a stellar goal.
