Scoreless Draw Ends Scorpions Hopes

Despite managing an impressive shut out on the road, the San Antonio Scorpions title defense has finally officially come to an end. The scoreless draw with Fort Lauderdale in Florida on Wednesday night was not enough as they needed a win to stay alive.

In truth, the Scorpions season has been effectively over for a number of weeks, but now even with a win in every remaining match they won’t qualify. It was still an impressive effort for the Scorpions but it all came to naught as the season is over, but may now allow some fringe players who haven’t secured 2016 contracts to play for the remainder of the 2016 season.

It was a solid first half from the Scorpions as they were able to control the match, having the bulk of the possession and the chances. Kris Tyrpak was again a key outlet for the Scorpions, really laying down a marker for a 2016 contract.

In the 31st minute the Scorpions had their best chance of the match as Tyrpak squared the ball for Billy Forbes who hit a powerful volley. David Meves got his arm to the ball and deflected it up in to the air allowing Meves to recover it.

On the very next attacking play from the Scorpions they had another good chance and again it was a Tyrpak, Forbes combination. This time, the roles were reversed as Forbes sent in a ball for Tyrpak but the Strikers defense got back well to clear it, which kept it scoreless at the break.

The second half saw things shift, as Fort Lauderdale had much more of the ball and looked to really wrap up their place in the playoffs. But they just could not get past Daniel Fernandes who had a phenomenal performance in goal again for the Scorpions.

Just after the hour mark Fernandes came up big to deny Stefano the goal as the Scorpions defense came apart big time. That left Stefano wide open, leaning him with a simple shot from 10 yards out, attempting to chip the keeper but Fernandes just managed to knock the ball away with his hand.

That would be the highlight of the half, as Fort Lauderdale struggled to trouble San Antonio’s defense which kept it scoreless. But the scoreless draw was not enough for the Scorpions as their season has ended as they needed to win out.
