University of Incarnate Word have seen their run come to an end as San Jose State managed to get past UIW men 2-1 on Sunday at Benson Stadium. It came thanks to a strong first half from the Spartans who put things away from the Cardinals.
After an early chance to Ben Conway, the Spartans hit the lead in the ninth minute after some great work from Rory Knibbs. Knibbs made a phenomenal run, cutting through the UIW defense, before beating his final two defenders to finish past the keeper to make it 1-0.
The Cardinals responded with chances coming in droves from all over the park with Dylan Kelly, Jonathan Camarena and Conway all shooting. Emmanuel Espinoza was doing well in the goal for the Spartans to keep UIW out.
After the 20th minute things evened out as the sides were able to trade chances, but still it seemed that UIW were on top. Conway was looking the most likely to score for the Cardinals, but the SJSU defense was doing well to keep the Cardinals off the score sheet.
But with five minutes to play in the half disaster struck as Joe Brown brought down Andrew Mendoza in the box. That allowed Rory Knibbs to step up and hit the penalty, scoring his sixth goal of the season so far, making it 2-0 at half-time.
The second half saw UIW start well, as they came out of the break determined to get in front. Both Callum Wright and Noah Keats had chances in the opening ten minutes before they got the goal they were looking for just after the hour mark.
Dylan Kelley did well to make a run, creating space which allowed him to send in a cross for Noah Keats. That left Keats with some space, just inside the box, allowing him to hit a powerful shot past the keeper to get back in to the match.
UIW continued to go on the attack throughout the match as they were looking most dangerous from set pieces. Camarena was the man putting in those corners but they just could not put those chances away as the match ended 2-1 to the Spartans.
