University of Incarnate Word’s Men’s team have shown they deserve their regional No. 10 ranking as they opened their conference slate with a win. UIW defeated CSU Bakersfield in an entertaining 3-2 win at Benson Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Cardinals did well, holding off a late comeback from the Roadrunners to manage to hold on for the win. That late comeback wasn’t enough as the UIWdefense seemed to be finally woken up by the second goal and held out well.
It was a strong start from UIW as they had a lot of the attack in the early stages getting plenty of inroads in to the CSU Bakersfield attack. That allowed plenty of opportunities for UIW but the Roadrunners defense was doing well, keeping UIW out with Jonathan Camarena being forced to hit corners but they just couldn’t get anyone on the end of it.
After two efforts from Cardinals who spent their summer playing with Corinthians FC SA, Joe Brown and Ben Conway were blocked, UIW got their goal. Thanks to such attack from Brown and Conway the Roadrunners were not able to deal with so much attack.
The goal came in the 34th minute as Brown sent in the ball for Dylan Kelly, which allowed him to flick the ball on. Kelly’s flick on found Ben Conway to open the scoring with a well taken strike across the left side of goal.
CSU-Bakersfield had the last chance of the half but they failed to do anything with it but took some heart in to the break. They had their only chance of the match so far in the closing stages of the half and took some momentum in to the second half.
That momentum vanished at the start of the second half as UIW doubled their lead after just two minutes of play. Again it was a long ball from Brown that was flicked on by Kelly to set up the opportunity, this time it was O’Neal Moore who put it away to make it 2-0.
The attack from the Cardinals continued and right after the hour mark it was three as Moore wrapped up his brace. Noah Keats sent a through ball for Moore allowing him to run on to it and sneak it inside the post.
After Conway shot wide CSU-Bakersfield seemed to respond and looked really lively for the first time in the match. In the 69th minute the Roadrunners pulled a goal back when Simon Doherty found Julian Zamora who unleashed a sweet volley that hit the back of the net.
The match was made interesting in the 74th minute as CSU Bakersfield set up an interesting finish. A long ball from Samuel Zimmerman found Simon Doherty, allowing him to cross in for Julian Zamora, in space to score the second.
That second goal seemed to wake up the Cardinals and they went back on the attack, as Ben Conway had one last chance. But the UIW defense did well and held out for the 3-2 despite the late scare.
