The long wait for UTSA’s first win of the season has finally come to an end after they managed a 1-0 win over Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton on Sunday. The Roadrunners went nine matches winless, entering in to league play after a tough non-conference schedule.
FAU actually started the match well, as they looked to have the better chances through those early stages. Katherine Tesno was doing well in the UTSA goal, holding out those early chances, making two good saves in the first eight minutes.
All the chances in the first half hour were going to FAU as they were the dominant side but the UTSA defense was the best they had been all season. It was a strong defensive performance, after conceding a boatload of goals in their earlier matches.
UTSA’s first shot of the game, gave the Roadrunners their opening goal, coming from nice individual work from Lauren Hodgdon. She made a great run in to the box, beating the FAU defense and then shooting from just inside the box and in to the back of the net in the 37th minute.
Shortly after the goal the players were quickly ushered from the field as lightning started striking around the ground. That effectively ended the half, with momentum gone, neither side was able to get any attack after coming back, keeping it 1-0 at the break, with UTSA leading despite being outshot 11-1.
With a lead in the second half UTSA were looking much more defensive as they tried to hold on to their first lead of the season. That saw Tesno kept busy throughout the half, but she had an incredible performance doing well to keep FAU out.
Tesno was forced to make eight saves in the second half, with FAU really pushing hard in the final stages but they could not break down the Roadrunners. By contrast FAU’s keeper failed to make a single save all match as a strong defensive performance gave UTSA the 1-0 win.
