Another San Antonio College derby took place on Saturday afternoon as St. Mary’s welcomed Our Lady of the Lake University to Sigma Beta Chi Field on Saturday afternoon. Unsurprisingly it was the NCAA Division II team that beat their NAIA counterparts as St. Mary’s won 3-0.
St. Mary’s were the much stronger side as they managed 12 shots on target to OLLU’s seven but the match was tight in the early stages. Both sides were fighting in the first half, which was largely restricted to a tight mid-field battle.
Jack Wolf was looking dangerous for the Rattlers as he was constantly getting shots away but rarely found the target. That was giving the Saints some measure of relief as they were struggling to create any real chances.
The crucial moment came with nine minutes to play in the first half after some nice work from Luis Sanchez. Sanchez was able to get a cross in which found Ryan Hoskins, who sent it home to open the scoring and St. Mary’s 1-0 up at the break.
After a solid 45 minutes, Igor Nunes do Nascimento made five saves in the match to that point, he was switched out. Jorge Cavazos came on for OLLU as Shane Hurley looked to see his two keepers in action in an effort to finalize his line-up for the real matches.
Just nine minutes in to the second half St. Mary’s were able to double their lead thanks to a set-piece. It was a corner from Aaron Dunks as he sent it in perfectly for Jack Verth who got his header away, too much for the keeper to make it two.
From there the Rattlers continued to attack and with 20 minutes to play they were able to make it 3-0 after some impressive build up. Ignacio Fernandez and Chris Nieto linked up well which allowed the space for Victor Luna to take a shot which he buried.
That allowed St. Mary’s to simply cruise out as they held their three goal lead down well to get their season opening win. For OLLU it shows that they have plenty of work to do ahead of the season, but that’s what these early matches are for.
