UIW already have a trophy for the season as they claimed the first ever UT-RGV championship, hosted by the new university this weekend. They claimed it thanks to a 1-0 extra time win against South Carolina State on Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals started the match typically well, as they controlled the early going with Nikki Poppa again looking the most likely to make something happen. Her early shot was well saved by the keeper but showed clear intent.
It was all Cardinals in the first half but the South Carolina State defense was proving difficult to break down. Karey Tylman came in to the match and looked like a dangerous asset for UIW but still she could not break through with Hailey Austin doing well in goal.
That was enough to keep it scoreless through to half-time but little was done from South Carolina State to stop the onslaught. Despite that it was actually a good start from South Carolina State who threatened the Cardinals early.
But it didn’t take long for UIW to take charge and from the tenth minute of the second half it was all Cardinals as they went on the attack. This time they were doing more passing, spreading the ball around, creating different chances which made life hard for the SCSU defense.
Austin was having a solid game in goal for SCSU as she was able to stop everything that came before here, keeping it scoreless. The last chance of the match came to Emily Halal but yet again Austin was up to it, making the save and sending it to extra time.
It took just four minutes in to extra time for the Cardinals to win the game and the title as they finally broke free. Marina Bermea sent the ball forward for Emani Stewart who ran on to the ball and slotted it home past the keeper for a golden goal.
