The San Antonio Scorpions returned home and got a much needed win on Saturday night after a rough road run. The win came at the expense of Jacksonville Armada who the Scorpions managed a 1-0 win at Toyota Field.
The opening stages saw plenty of promise in attack for the Scorpions as they looked to get a vital early goal. But they were often stopped by some overzealous defending from Jacksonville, which created plenty of fouls and produced a fifth minute yellow card to Fabricio Ortiz.
A long ball over the top in the seventh minute had Daniel Fernandes scrambling as it was played over the top for Jemal Johnson. He ran in on goal and forced a solid save out of the new Scorpions keeper.
A quick counter gave the Scorpions their first real chance of the match as a long ball found Cesar Elizondo on the right. That allowed him to run at goal, using his neat footwork to beat his defender but his shot was too tame, making it an easy save for Miguel Gallardo.
On the half hour the Scorpions started to get control back and had a golden opportunity after some nice work up the left. Stephen De Roux was able to send a low cross for Omar Cummings who slid in but send his effort agonizingly wide of goal, which would be as close as either team would get as the half ended scoreless.
The Scorpions came out from the break determined to get a goal and they stole possession and quickly rushed forward. De Roux was key again as he set up Cesar Elizondo 30 yards out but his effort was at a simple height for the keeper, keeping it scoreless.
Jacksonville should have had the lead in the 53rd minute as they rushed forward and created a loose ball right in front. But Fernandes showed his experience doing phenomenally well to deny the Armada an opener.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 64th minute after a flowing counter attack sent Billy Forbes clean through on goal. That allowed him to shoot low and hard powerfully, Gallardo got a hand on it but it had too much as it hit the back of the net, giving the Scorpions a much needed lead.
Jacksonville had a good chance in the 85th minute after some nice work on the edge of the box by Shawn Nicklaw. He got in to space at the front, but sent his shot just wide of goal, sparing the Scorpions.
That would be as good as the Armada could manage as the Scorpions held on well defensively for a much needed win. That win sees the Scorpions leapfrog Jacksonville who now drop to the bottom of the league.
